A feature list can make two soundbars look almost identical. A sample review usually proves otherwise. Here is how we separate a market-ready soundbar from a product that may create returns, support tickets, or disappointing reviews.

Quick answer: The key features to look for in soundbars are the channel layout, bass design, HDMI ARC or eARC support, audio format compatibility, dialogue clarity, room and TV fit, control logic, connection stability, and production quality. For an OEM project, those features must also match the target retail price, sales channel, packaging limit, and local compliance requirements.

We often receive an inquiry that says, "We need a Dolby Atmos soundbar. Please send your best price." It sounds specific, but it leaves most of the important decisions unanswered. Is the product for an entry-level TV bundle, a mainstream retail shelf, or a premium home theater range? Does the customer want a clean all-in-one bar, stronger bass from a wireless subwoofer, or rear speakers for a real surround package?

DECISION 01

Start with the customer, not the longest feature list

A hotel-room soundbar, an online best-seller, and a flagship home theater system should not share the same specification. Adding every available function usually increases cost and testing work without creating equal value for the buyer.

Entry-level TV audio Simple setup, clear dialogue, compact packaging, stable HDMI ARC or optical input, and straightforward controls.
Mainstream home entertainment A 2.1-channel system, stronger bass, multiple inputs, useful EQ modes, and a remote that feels intuitive.
Premium home theater Dolby Atmos, height information, separate bass, surround speakers, eARC, and careful acoustic tuning.

The best brief begins with the intended customer, room, retail price, and sales channel. Once those four facts are clear, the feature choices become much easier.

DECISION 02

Choose a channel layout the customer can actually understand

Channel numbers are useful only when the physical design and tuning support the promise. A 2.1 soundbar normally combines left and right channels with dedicated bass. A 5.1 system adds a center channel and surround channels. A 7.1.2 Dolby Atmos system adds a broader surround field and two height channels.

A sample-room reality

A convincing 2.1 soundbar is a better product than a poorly tuned "surround" system. Channel count creates the expectation; engineering has to deliver it.

DECISION 03

Decide where the bass should come from

A built-in subwoofer keeps the system compact and reduces the number of cartons and power connections. A separate wireless subwoofer allows a larger enclosure and usually gives a stronger low-frequency presentation. Neither option is automatically better.

Built-in bass works well when...

The customer values a clean setup, smaller footprint, easier installation, and simpler logistics.

A wireless subwoofer works well when...

The product needs deeper bass, greater visual value, and a stronger home theater story.

DECISION 04

Treat HDMI behavior as a product feature, not a line on the carton

HDMI ARC can send TV audio to the soundbar and may allow the TV remote to control volume through CEC. HDMI eARC supports higher-bandwidth audio formats and is the stronger choice for premium systems. On a sample, we would not stop after seeing the ARC logo on the input panel. We would test power-on behavior, input switching, lip sync, TV remote volume, standby recovery, and compatibility across several TV brands. DECISION 05

Make the audio-format promise precise

Dolby Digital and Dolby Atmos serve different product positions. Dolby Atmos is designed around spatial sound, including the placement and movement of sound in three-dimensional space. Buyers can review the technology directly on the official Dolby Atmos page.

For an OEM project, confirm the decoding requirement, speaker layout, signal path, licensing scope, supported inputs, and packaging claims together. DECISION 06

Listen for the problems specifications do not show

Two soundbars can use similar drivers and amplifier power yet sound very different. During sample evaluation, use spoken news, quiet film dialogue, dense action scenes, music with sustained bass, and a low-volume night test. Move through the full volume range instead of listening only at a comfortable level.

Clear speech without harshness; bass without rattling or boom; stable volume steps; no obvious hiss at close distance; balanced sound across movie, music, and news modes; and no sudden tonal change near maximum output.

Check the television, the furniture, and the shipping carton

A soundbar may sound good and still be wrong for the market. Confirm its width beside common TV sizes, its height in front of a television, the position of the IR receiver, cable clearance, wall-mount points, feet, finish quality, and display visibility. Then check gross weight and carton dimensions because a few centimeters can change shipping cost or retail shelf fit.

This is also where industrial design becomes commercial. A metal grille may support a clean premium appearance. Fabric can soften the look. A glossy surface can attract attention in images but may reveal fingerprints. These are not decoration-only decisions; they influence product positioning, packaging protection, and customer reviews.

DECISION 08

Use the soundbar for ten minutes without a manual

If the controls are confusing in the sample room, they will be confusing in a customer's living room. Check the remote layout, button feedback, input names, LED or display brightness, volume memory, default input, Bluetooth reconnection, EQ selection, and standby behavior.

Good usability rarely appears as the headline feature, but it influences return rates and customer support. A product that reconnects predictably and gives clear feedback often feels more premium than a more complicated model with a longer specification sheet.

DECISION 09

Approve a repeatable product, not one impressive sample

Before mass production, define the golden sample, key component list, acoustic limits, cosmetic standard, connection tests, firmware version, accessory set, packaging method, labeling, and market-specific compliance plan. For custom projects, agree early on which items may change: logo, grille, housing color, remote, startup tone, EQ, connection set, packaging, manuals, and accessories.

The aim is simple: the first production order should behave like the sample you approved, and the next order should behave like the first.

What is the most important feature in a soundbar?

The most important feature is a configuration that matches the intended use. For everyday TV viewing, dialogue clarity and stable TV connection may matter more than a high channel count. For premium home theater, spatial audio, bass extension, and surround performance carry more weight.

Does every soundbar need HDMI eARC?

No. HDMI ARC or optical may be enough for an entry-level product. eARC becomes more important when the project requires high-bitrate or uncompressed multichannel audio and premium formats such as Dolby Atmos through compatible equipment.

Is a built-in subwoofer better than a wireless subwoofer?
