You want surround sound without running speaker cable across the living room. Then you notice power cords in the installation manual. What, exactly, does “wireless” mean?
All rear speakers need energy to produce sound. Wireless rear speakers get that energy from a power connection, a powered receiver connected by speaker cables, or a built-in battery. “Wireless” usually describes the audio link from the soundbar to the rear section. It does not necessarily mean there are no cables behind your sofa.
Battery-powered rear speakers can operate without a power cord while their batteries are charged, but you still need a charging routine.
Before choosing a soundbar system, look at its connection diagram rather than relying on the front-of-box description. The most useful question is: which cables will be present where I want to put the speakers?
Three rear-speaker layouts you may encounter
The diagrams below separate audio transmission from power delivery. They are simplified examples, not wiring instructions for a particular model. The soundbar's own power supply and TV connection are omitted.
Dashed connection: wireless audio. Solid connection: a power or speaker cable, as labelled.
1. Individually powered rear speakers
Each rear speaker receives audio wirelessly and has its own power connection. You avoid a long audio cable from the front of the room, but must plan power access for both rear positions.
2. A powered rear receiver
Requires a power connection
A rear module receives the wireless signal and drives the attached speakers. The speakers may not need individual outlets, but cables still run from the module to them.
3. Battery-powered rear speakers
Powered by internal batteries
Charged batteries allow playback without power cords at the rear positions. Check how charging works, whether accessories are included and how long playback lasts under stated conditions.
Some systems combine these arrangements. For example, one powered rear speaker may connect to the other by a speaker cable. Count the actual outlets, modules and cables in the manual for the exact package you intend to buy.
For documented examples of receiver-based designs, see Samsung's wireless rear-speaker setup guide and LG's SP7R installation instructions. Those instructions apply to the specified products, not to every wireless soundbar system.
Choose around your sofa, not just your TV
There are no convenient outlets behind the sofa
Battery-powered rear speakers are worth considering if keeping cords away from the seating area is your priority. Decide where they will charge before buying. Moving them after each listening session may be acceptable for occasional movie nights but less convenient for daily use.
A receiver-based system still needs power at the rear module. It changes where power is required; it does not remove that requirement.
The speakers will stay in the same place every day
A mains-powered arrangement may be simpler to live with because it avoids routine battery charging. Check outlet locations, adapter size and the cable route to each stand or shelf. Make sure the supplied cables can reach without crossing a walkway.
The sofa sits against the back wall
Power is only part of the decision. You also need suitable places for the speakers. Follow the system's placement instructions, including orientation and any height-driver clearance. A cable-free position is not useful if the speaker is blocked by furniture.
For the front unit, our soundbar placement guide covers common TV-area positioning issues. Use the rear-speaker manual for model-specific surround placement.
A wireless soundbar does not make every component wireless
Check the complete package. A wireless subwoofer may still require a power cord. The main soundbar needs power, and the TV connection may use HDMI ARC/eARC or optical even when the rear audio link is wireless.
Bluetooth music streaming is a separate feature. Its presence does not establish that the rear speakers pair through ordinary Bluetooth, that any Bluetooth speaker can serve as a rear channel, or that the TV connection is cable-free.
If the television connection is still undecided, read our HDMI ARC versus optical comparison. Choose a connection supported by both devices and appropriate for the audio formats you plan to use.
What to check before placing an order
- Exact soundbar and rear-speaker compatibility. Confirm the model numbers. Matching branding or wireless capability alone does not establish compatibility.
- Every required power connection. Include the soundbar, subwoofer, rear receiver and rear speakers where applicable. Check the plug and adapter configuration for your market.
- Included cables and their lengths. Product photos may omit them. Ask for a packing list and connection diagram showing any cables between the rear components.
- The battery charging method. Establish whether charging uses a cable, dock or another arrangement. Confirm whether playback during charging is supported instead of assuming it is.
- Playback time under stated conditions. For rechargeable rears, ask which volume level, content and settings were used. Battery capacity by itself is not a verified runtime figure.
- Pairing and reconnection behaviour. Check the setup procedure and what happens after the system loses power or the rear speakers run out of charge.
For a home purchase, these checks help you plan installation. For a retail range, they also identify what the product listing and quick-start guide should explain before a customer opens the box.
A battery-powered satellite option: Samesay SRA7010G
The Samesay SRA7010G soundbar system is listed as a 7.1.2-channel Dolby Atmos package with a wireless subwoofer and two satellite speakers. Its product specification lists a 7.4V / 2600mAh battery for the satellites.
This makes it a relevant configuration to evaluate when rear-speaker placement without attached power cords during battery operation is part of the product brief. It does not mean the complete home-theater system operates without cables.
Before selecting it for your project, request the current charging instructions, measured playback time with test conditions, supplied accessories and pairing procedure. Those details determine how the battery-powered arrangement fits the intended use.

Three questions that often come up next
Can I add any wireless speakers behind my sofa?
Do not assume so. Surround channels generally require a supported speaker set and connection method. Check the soundbar manufacturer's compatibility information. A speaker that plays music from your phone is not automatically a compatible rear speaker.
Does “wireless subwoofer” mean wireless rear speakers too?
No. The description may refer only to the subwoofer's audio link. Rear speakers could connect through cables to another component, use a separate receiver or follow a different arrangement. Read the whole system diagram.
Can I leave rechargeable rear speakers connected to power?
That depends on the model's intended charging and playback behaviour. Follow its instructions and use the specified charging equipment. Confirm continuous connected use if that is how you plan to install the system.
